MEDIA
Welcome to the media section of the VII Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean (RP21). This will be the first time that it will be held virtually –from 1 to 4th November 2021- and will convene under the theme “Building Resilient Economies in the Americas and the Caribbean”. The event aims to reduce risks for future disasters, such as the actual pandemic or extreme events worsen by climate change.
The event was postponed from its original date in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which deepened inequalities in the region.
Please visit this section to be updated with important dates and the latest information about RP21 and events only organized for media as the ones that follow:
- Press conferences at the beginning and end of the event
- Media training on Disaster Risk Reduction topics
- Interviews with experts
- Q&As in our social media with RP’s key actors to gain a good insight of the hot topics that will be discussed in depth during the 4-day regional conference and that includes lessons from COVID-19 and adaptation to climate change among others.
Media outlets and media representatives are invited to cover the RP21 to know more about the increasing economic and human costs of disasters in the Americas, including the special challenges facing small island developing States (SIDS) such a the host country, Jamaica. The Caribbean is one of the world’s most exposed regions to extreme weather events and seismic activity.
PR21 will focus on identifying how governments, civil society leaders, technical and scientific institutions, the private sector, and the media can work together to strengthen the capacities of the region and to achieve the targets of the Sendai Framework For Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030).
The opening and closing session, the plenary sessions, parallel sessions, learning labs and side events will be available to credentialed media during RP21 and there will also be an innovation platform, official statements and ideas incubator section to showcase the most innovative initiatives that have already been put in place successfully in the continent.
It will also include specific media training opportunities in Disaster Risk Reduction issues linked to the agenda topics.
The media will have the opportunity to talk with the delegates during the event, through the networking tools.
Media representatives are required to register to attend any of the sessions during the 4-day event (see the programme here) and to attend any of the special events organized for the media, please fill in this registration form.
