Agenda

The Agenda will include Plenary Sessions / High-level dialogues, which will aim at connecting global discussions with regional priorities. The event will have numerous Parallel Sessions that will cover important aspects for the implementation of the priorities of the Sendai Framework in the region. These sessions are important to share learning and exchange best practices in disaster risk reduction of multiple stakeholders across sectors. The VII Regional Platform will also host a Ministerial Meeting, in which Ministers and High-Level Government representatives of different sectors take stock of the challenges and opportunities as well as mark the priorities for the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region for the next two years. The output of this meeting is a Ministerial Declaration.

Due to the intergovernmental and inter-sectorial nature of the regional platform sessions, an Advisory Council is formed and charged with designing the agenda and establishing the structure and content of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean. The Advisory Council is formed by representatives of Governments, Civil Society, Private Sector, Science and Technology Community, UN agencies and Development Banks. The principles governing the composition of the Advisory Council seek to ensure a diversity of perspectives, the representation of different stakeholders and expertise in all aspects of DRR and related subjects. The Advisory Council of the RP is usually formed, at least, 12 months before the event in order to develop and sign off on the Concept Note for the Regional Platform, design the event's structure and develop its agenda.

Official Statements

Delegations are invited to present official statements of up to five (5) minutes. All delegations and sub-regional, regional, international, non-governmental or private organizations are invited to present such statements. Only registered and confirmed participants can submit a request on behalf of their delegation. The Official Statement can be presented in a written format or delivered to an audience with a pre-recorded video during the Regional Platform.

Regional Action Plan (RAP)

The Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the Implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030 in the Americas is the adopted roadmap for the implementation of disaster risk reduction in the region of the America and Caribbean, which aims to achieve the targets of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030. A stock-taking process at the regional level is being undertaken and will reflect on the lessons learned, challenges and opportunities present in the region – including those emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic - toward adjusting the RAP and the pace of its implementation. To this end, a regional governmental consultation is being led by the Government of Jamaica and will conclude in a RAP technical session at the RP21 on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. The key messages, recommendations, and next steps will serve as inputs to the Seventh Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (2022), the Mid-Term Review of the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the session of the Ministerial Panel at the RP21 event.

A parallel Civil Society Mid-Term Review of Implementation of Sendai & Regional Action Plan is also taking place on the RAP & the Mid-Term Review of implementation of the Sendai Framework. The results of this non-governmental consultation will be compiled in a summary report and put forward in an official statement by GNDR on behalf of civil society organizations in the region for consideration of Member States as well as to complement the governmental consultative process taking place in the context of the RP21.

Side Events

A limited number of side events will be available, covering key areas in DRR at regional level. They will have a standard duration of 60 minutes and are announced in the RP agenda.

Learning labs

Several learning labs sessions will offer facilitated peer-to-peer learning opportunities on specific topics relevant to the themes of the Regional Platform. A small-scale setting of 20-30 participants will provide an effective environment for peer-to-peer learning, knowledge and experience sharing.

Ideas Incubator

The Ideas Incubator is an arena in which the selected participants of the VII Regional Platform will have 5 minutes (strictly timed) to present their projects, products or initiatives in the field of disaster risk reduction using a pre-recorded video format.

The goal is to offer a space to share new ideas and spark innovation. This space complements and expands the range of topics discussed and presented in the VII Regional Platform. The Ideas Incubator is open to all participants. Those interested in presenting at the Ideas Incubator shall fill in an application form submitting a two minutes maximum video teaser and the Platform organizers will select presentations according to the following criteria: diversity of topics, gender balance, geographic diversity, and space availability.

Applications are now open. Ideas Incubator participants will be invited to record a video to be shared on the RP web page.

Innovation Platform/Expo

The Innovation Platform is a complimentary (free of charge) space offered to registered participant organizations to showcase their work related to disaster risk reduction and the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.  Showcasing your work in the Innovation Platform area will provide your organization with the opportunity to be recognized as a contributor to resilience at the RP21.  The Innovation Platform will be hosted within the RP21 virtual platform and offer virtual booths for participating organizations. It will run between Monday, November 1 and Thursday, November 4, 2021.  A total of 40 booths will be available.   Registrations will be open from September 6th to October 15th.
